Why SMS Text Messages May Not Be Delivered

In some cases, SMS messages sent from DocVilla may not be delivered to patients. This issue is typically not related to the system itself but rather due to carrier-level restrictions on the recipient’s mobile network.

Common Cause

Initial logs may indicate a carrier-level routing error from telecom carriers such as Verizon, AT&T Mobility or T-Mobile.

This commonly occurs in healthcare settings when:

  • Automated spam filters within telecom networks flag certain messages

  • Messages contain sensitive keywords, medication names, or clinical terms

  • The content is identified as potentially promotional or restricted by the telecom carriers

As a result, the carrier may block or fail to deliver the message.

How to Troubleshoot

To confirm if the issue is content-related:

  1. Try sending a different, simple message to the same recipient (e.g., “Hi”).

  2. If the new message is successfully delivered:

    • This confirms that the original message content was flagged by the carrier’s spam filters.

Recommended Action

  • Avoid using sensitive or trigger words (especially medication names or detailed clinical terms) in SMS messages.

  • Keep messages simple and concise.

  • Use neutral language when possible.

Important Notes

  • This is a telecom carrier-level issue and is outside DocVilla’s direct control.

  • Delivery depends on the recipient’s mobile carrier policies and filtering systems.

  • There is no guaranteed workaround if a carrier continues to block specific types of content.
